Lessons from the Document Management Trenches

The Kalliope project was undertaken to increase knowledge sharing, collaboration, and communication between software engineers in various project teams and labs at four or more HP locations worldwide. Design, planning, and implementation of the project are described. Emphasis is placed on several factors that affected the success of the project. Important factors considered are: obtaining senior management support, creating a motivation/incentive framework, building the necessary organizational infrastructure, and developing a knowledge sharing culture. This paper features a practical perspective on the "lessons learned" during the implementation of this project.
